Canada Summer Jobs Program - Media Coordinator

Hours: 35 hours/week
Location: Ottawa, ON (hybrid work position)

About the Ottawa Boys Choir

The Ottawa Boys Choir is a newly formed community arts organization dedicated to fostering musical excellence, confidence, and camaraderie among boys aged 9-18. Through choral training, performance, and community engagement, we help young singers develop both artistic and personal skills while contributing to the cultural life of Ottawa.

Position Summary

The Media Coordinator will support the development and implementation of a strategic recruitment initiative aimed at increasing awareness of the Ottawa Boys Choir and attracting new members. This student will work closely with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors to design outreach materials, connect with schools, and promote the choir through community channels.

Key Responsibilities

School Outreach

  • Identify elementary and secondary schools within Ottawa and the surrounding region that align with OBC's recruitment goals.
  • Contact school music teachers, principals, and administrators to introduce the choir and share recruitment materials.
  • Assist in organizing and scheduling school visits, presentations, or demonstration workshops (virtual or in-person).
  • Prepare age-appropriate information packages for students and educators.

Community Engagement & Marketing

  • Develop promotional materials, such as posters, brochures, social media content, and email newsletters.
  • Support the planning and delivery of 3-6 community outreach events (e.g., open rehearsals, pop-up performances, booth tables at local events).
  • Maintain and update OBC's social media accounts throughout the work term to highlight choir activities and recruitment opportunities.
  • Create a posting plan for the next choir season August 2026 through June 2027

Video Production

Plan, film, and edit a series of 5-8 short videos to be posted on Instagram throughout the year, including:
  • Singer spotlights / interviews
  • Rehearsal highlights and behind-the-scenes clips
  • A "Why Join Our Choir" recruitment video
  • Fun, trend-friendly Reels

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary student (as required for Canada Summer Jobs eligibility), preferably in music, arts administration, communications, education, marketing, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable speaking with educators, parents, and youth.
  • Experience in choral music, youth programming, or the performing arts is an asset.
  • Organized, proactive, and comfortable working independently
  • Strong writing, storytelling and digital media skills; experience with Canva, social media management, or basic graphic design is an asset.
  • Familiar with Instagram trends and youth-friendly content

In order to be eligible for a Canada Summer Jobs funded position like this one, participants must:

  • Be between 15-30 years of age, at the start of the funded position.
  • Have a valid SIN
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or someone to whom Refugee Status has been granted/conferred. (International students, and persons who are here in Canada on a work, youth, or visitor visa/permit are not eligible for the program.)
  • Attest that you will be employed in only one Canada Summer Job funded job at the same time
